Spray Tanning and Tattoos: What You Need to Know

If you have tattoos and you're thinking about getting a spray tan, you might be wondering if the tan will have any effect on your ink. The good news is that a spray tan shouldn't cause your tattoos to fade. However, it's important to keep in mind a couple of things for our tattooed and tanning friends.

Make Sure Your Tattoo is Fully Healed

As long as your tattoo is fully healed, spray tans will not cause any damage to your ink. Introducing fresh ink to the sun or tanning bed (which we do not suggest) or even sunless tanning products, could prematurely result in the rapid and long-term fading of the color or your tattoo. Follow your artist’s instructions for healing and once you are fully healed, then you can tan.

The Color of Your Tattoo

The color of your tattoos might appear slightly different when you have a tan, especially if you have some color in. This is because the pigments in your skin will be darker, which can affect the way the colors of your tattoos appear. It's important to remember that a sunless tanner will not affect the color of your tattoo long-term. The tattoo ink is embedded in the deeper layers of your skin and will not be affected by a topical application of tanner.

It is Only Temporary

While spray tanning can darken light-colored or delicate tattoos, the effects are only temporary and can be wiped off after your session. If you do not want your tattoo exposed to a sunless tanner, cover it as best as possible or just avoid that area of the body. The lifespan of a sunless tan is anywhere from 5 to 10 days, so if you apply your spray tan to your tattoo, once it starts to fade, your tattoo's appearance will once again be enhanced. 

Always Do a Test Spray Early

If you're planning on getting a spray tan before a big event, it's a good idea to test it out a few weeks beforehand to see how your tattoos will look with the tan. Additionally, this will be a good test to make sure the sunless tanner color is the perfect shade for your skin tone. 

Tanning with Tattoos is Fine

It's always a good idea to protect your tattoo from the sun's harmful rays as prolonged exposure to UV light can cause fading and damage to the skin. Always remember to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your tattoo and your skin from the sun. With proper care and attention, you can enjoy both a beautiful sunless tan and a vibrant, long-lasting tattoo.
